Delta High School Tennis

VS

Pendleton Heights (SENIOR DAY)

Wednesday, September 25th at 5:00 p.m. (ceremony starts at 4:30 p.m.)

Win 7 - 0

Delta Tennis will get a chance to play in a showdown match for the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship next week.

The Eagles shut out a solid Pendleton Heights team on Wednesday evening. Delta won the match 7-0 on Senior Night at the DHS courts.

Also Wednesday, Mt. Vernon upended 30th-ranked New Palestine.  As a result, the current conference standings are:

Mt. Vernon 6-0

New Palestine 6-1

Delta 5-1

Delta plays at Mt. Vernon on Monday evening.  If the Eagles win, they would create a three-way tie for the HHC championship and also would reclaim the HHC traveling trophy racket, which currently is in the possession of Mt. Vernon.

The Eagles (10-5 overall) put themselves in position for this by taking care of business on Senior Night.

All four seniors played varsity and won their matches.

Senior Kody Vest gained a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Pendleton junior Owen Kean at No. 1 singles.

Senior Owen Cupp dominated from start to finish in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.

Senior James Root played No. 4 singles and collected his first-ever varsity victory.  He hung on for a 6-2, 7-5 victory, rallying from an 0-4 deficit in the second set.

And senior Kam Swoboda teamed with junior Kaden Crist to win 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.  Swoboda leveled his season varsity record at 4-4 with the win.

In other matches:

At No. 1 doubles, juniors Brady Williams and Ben Miller trailed 0-3 in the opening set but then settled down and rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Pendleton seniors Ivan Chen and Garrett Morgan.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Aaron Elliott and sophomore Tyce Dishman were in control throughout in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

At. No. 3 singles, freshman Luke Atkinson gained a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The Eagles won the JV match 8-3 to remain unbeaten for the season in conference matches.  Overall, the JV team is 11-1-1 this fall.

Colten Cruea won 8-2 at the top singles spot.  John Atkinson/Ayden Mitchell and Bryce Carmichael/Graham Sieber each won 8-0 at the top doubles positions.

Roman Ashcraft and Andrew Alexander grinded out tough singles wins.  Additional doubles winners were Alexander Smith/Daniel Tokar, Jacob Williams/Jason Ogle and Maddox Weddle/Rylan Oliver.

The JV plays Thursday at 5 p.m. at Eastern (Howard) in Greentown.

Varsity hosts the Delta Invitational on Saturday, with an opening match at 8:45 a.m. against Norwell.  The 8-team field also includes unbeaten Western, an outstanding team that has been receiving votes for a state ranking.

JV also is scheduled to play on Saturday at the Fort Wayne Carroll tournament against Homestead and Carroll.
