In a battle of two of District 4’s top teams, the Eagles handled Marion 4-1 on Wednesday evening at the DHS courts.
Annually, Delta and Marion are the top contenders for the regional championship. Most years Delta has maintained a small advantage in depth, and that was the case again in this match.
The Eagles swept doubles, with Maggie Hunt/Janet Wegener winning 6-1, 6-0 and Madelyn Haley/Iva Witter prevailing 6-2, 6-2.
In singles, sophomore Gabby Knight handed Marion sophomore Graciella Solis her first loss of the season. The score was 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, freshman Brylee Beckley defeated Marion senior Marley White, 6-4, 6-3.
Marion picked up its lone point at No. 1 singles. In a matchup of two seniors, Marion’s Jaden Sebastian downed Gwendolyn Clark 6-1, 6-1.
Delta won the JV match 9-0 with no trouble.
The 22nd-ranked Eagles are now 9-4 and will play at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Yorktown in the rescheduled SmashCancer match.
