Playing short-handed with two varsity players out of the lineup, the Eagles battled hard against 12th-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll but came up short in a 5-0 loss. The match was played at a neutral site, Norwell HS.
Two matches went to third-set tiebreaks. Sophomore Kody Vest dropped a 6-4, 3-6, (4-10) result at No. 3 singles. Juniors Preston Shanayda and Jake Bilby fell 5-7, 7-5, (6-10) at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Owen Vest (No. 2 singles) missed the match due to illness. Senior Isaac Anderson (#2 doubles) sat out due to injury.
Junior Simon Marlow filled in a No. 2 singles and competed well, but lost 1-6, 2-6 to a hard-hitting senior.
FW Carroll controlled the matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, winning each in straight sets.
Delta won the JV match 8-5. The Eagles swept the entire first round of four singles and three doubles matches. Winners were Caleb Hewitt, Owen Cupp, Ben Miller, Ayden Mitchell, Brady Williams/Aaron Elliott, John Atkinson/Will Kile, and Kam Swoboda/James Root. In the playback matches, Matteo Caddedu/Alex Smith picked up a victory.
The Eagles (9-8 overall, 4-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference), host league opponent Pendleton Heights tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 21) for the Senior Day match. The ceremony starts at 4:30 with the match to follow. Seniors being honored will include Isaac Anderson, Riley Bratton, Colin McCrady, Heath Sprague, Owen Vest and exchange student Matteo Caddedu.
