Delta overcame some challenges Wednesday night and claimed a 5-2 non-conference victory at Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran for the Eagles’ 11th straight victory.
Challenges included:
- The 90-minute bus ride.
- A lower leg injury suffered by top singles player Gabby Knight the day before.
- Illness for No. 2 singles player Brylee Beckley, who hasn’t felt well the past week and will miss tonight’s match against Greenfield.
- An experienced Concordia team that has been very close to cracking the Top 30 state rankings this season and had six seniors and three juniors in the 10-player varsity lineup for this match
- And a young Delta lineup of six sophomores and a freshman among the 10-player varsity lineup for this match. Three of the sophomores were playing a varsity match for the first time.
Despite all the challenges, Delta won the match and dominated at many of the positions.
Concordia picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, both in three sets. Gabby Knight felt to junior Lauren Harris, 0-6, 6-3, 2-6. Brylee Beckley lost to undefeated Emma Jansing, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 in the night’s longest match.
In the rest of the spots, Delta won 60 games and lost just 17.
Sophomore Elizabeth Bamidele at No. 3 singles and sophomore Olivia Marshall at No. 4 singles dropped a total of only five games.
No. 1 doubles players junior Kelsey Vest and sophomore Katie Manor won 6-1, 6-0 over a solid Concordia team of two seniors. The same two players extended Manor and Janet Wegener to a tiebreaker a year ago. Manor and Vest are now 17-1 this spring.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Rowan Hinds and freshman Alexa Bratton won 6-3, 6-4 and are now 15-3 together,
At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Marley Dowling and Anna Marcum won 6-3, 6-1 in their varsity debut.
The JV team won 5-3.
Next up is a home conference match Thursday evening against Greenfield-Central.
