Win 5 - 0

Delta began pursuit of its 28th straight sectional title with a 5-0 shutout victory over Yorktown on Thursday evening in windy, cool conditions at the DHS courts.

The 28th-ranked Eagles moved to 18-5 overall and will face Muncie Burris for the championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Delta yielded only 17 games to the Tigers in the semifinal match.

Senior Tanner Southerland won 6-0, 6-2 over Yorktown senior Mason Minniear at No. 1 singles. Southerland continues to put together a strong senior year as he is now 18-5 for the season after going 15-11 at No. 1 singles a year ago.

Senior Josef Zacek also played a strong match, winning 6-2, 6-2 over John Hicks at No. 2 singles.  Zacek is 11-10 this fall.

At No. 3 singles, junior Adam Altobella cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Anton Isaacs.  Altobella improved his record to 16-6.

Senior Brandon Jackson and junior Walker Boyle were tested in the first set by Yorktown sophomores Ethan Darby and Raphael Sabijon before rattling off seven games in a row to win 6-4, 6-0.  Jackson is 21-2 while Boyle is 12-1 this fall after missing several matches in quarantine.

The victory was No. 72 of Jackson’s career, which ties him with his uncle, Daniel Jackson, a doubles standout from 1998 to 2001.

At No. 2 doubles, seniors Riley Windsor and Jordan Ashton won 6-2, 6-3 to complete the sweep.  They are now 16-5 for the season.

Delta has won every sectional championship from 1993 through 2019.  In 23 of those 27 seasons, the Eagles also have won the regional championship.
