Lucky number 13.
For a record-setting 13th consecutive season, the girls’ tennis team has clinched the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship. The Eagles dominated Pendleton Heights 5-0 on the road Monday to remain unbeaten in league play, allowing them to secure at least a share of the HHC title.
This is the first team in girls or boys sports to ever win 13 straight HHC championships. (In fact, the Eagles have won 24 of the past 25 HHC titles in girls’ tennis, failing to do so only in 2009.)
Overall, Delta has won 86 consecutive conference dual matches in girls’ tennis.
This one was never in doubt as Delta dropped only three games total in the five matches.
Winning 6-0, 6-0 were Iva Witter at No. 3 singles and Kelsey Vest/Rowan Hinds at No. 2 doubles. Gabby Knight, Brylee Beckley and the doubles team of Janet Wegener/Katie Manor each gave up just one game.
In the JV match, Delta prevailed 6-1.
Delta, ranked 20th, improved to 14-2 at the varsity level and 10-4 in JV matches.
The Eagles will play Tuesday at home against a solid Fort Wayne Concordia opponent. It is Senior Night as the team will honor its six seniors: Janet Wegener, Iva Witter, Emily Hayes, Rylen Jones, Autumn Subler and Emily Woodson. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the match to follow shortly after 5 p.m.
