With four newcomers among its seven varsity players, the 2017 version of the Delta Eagles got its season started over the weekend at the Jeffersonville Invitational. The Eagles finished sixth in the tough 8-team varsity field and also were sixth in the JV standings.
Among the individual highlights:
> Senior Jason Wegener finished runner-up at No. 1 singles with a 2-1 record
> Juniors Tannon Dishman and Joel Ashman took third place at No. 1 doubles with a 2-1 record
> Sophomore Mason Knight and freshman Michael Curtis were fourth at No. 2 doubles with a 2-1 record
> Seniors Jackson Boyle and Caleb Gillis finished runner-up at JV No. 1 doubles with a 2-1 record
> The JV team won all four of its doubles matches Friday night against Jeffersonville. Winners were Boyle-Gillis, Jaigen Glaze/Ben Slavin, Cade Brown/Riley Windsor, and Daniel Vencel/Devin McKinley
More than 60 team members and family members spent the weekend at Jeffersonville. Besides the tennis action, the group dined together at Clucker’s restaurant along the Ohio River and walked across the mile-long pedestrian bridge from Indiana to Kentucky.
All team members got to play at least once and most played two or more matches during the weekend.
The Eagles will play New Palestine in the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener at 5:15 p.m. Monday (Aug. 21). Those two teams finished first and second, respectively, in the HHC a year ago and are considered the top two favorites again this year.
