Mt. Vernon completed back-to-back undefeated Hoosier Heritage Conference boys’ tennis championships on Monday evening with a 4-1 victory over Delta on the Marauder courts.

Delta (12-6 overall, 5-2 HHC) challenged the 29th-ranked Marauders but was unable to pull out two close doubles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, the teams were tied 4-4 in both sets but Mt. Vernon pulled away late to win 7-5, 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Delta won the opening set 6-2. The second set was tied at 5-5, but again Mt. Vernon came up big and won the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Delta got its point at No. 1 singles where Kody Vest won 6-1, 6-2 over Carter Harrington, who was subbing in for an injured Manny Downs.

Mt. Vernon won the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches by identical scores of 6-3, 6-2.

In the JV match, Delta gained an 8-6 victory on the strength of seven doubles victories.  This completed an undefeated conference season for the JV Eagles, who finished their season with a 15-1 overall record.  Delta’s middle school team recently won the conference title as well.

Next up for the Eagles will be a makeup match against Western for the championship of the Delta Invitational. This match will be 5:15 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Elwood HS courts.  Western is 15-1, with its only loss to Culver Academies.

The Delta Sectional then begins Wednesday when the Eagles face Muncie Central in the opening round at 4:45 p.m.
