The Eagles tuned up for today’s SmashCancer match by smashing Marion in a road match Wednesday evening. The Giants were unbeaten at 9-0 entering the match, but Delta had too much firepower.
Delta won 4-1 at the varsity level and 7-2 at the JV level over the Giants.
Ranked 21st, the Eagles improved to 12-2 after wrapping up the victory quickly. The first two courts to finish were the doubles matches, where Janet Wegener/Katie Manor won 6-0, 6-0 and Kelsey Vest/Rowan Hinds won 6-1, 6-1. Both doubles positions are 15-2 for the season.
For Wegener, it was her 60th career varsity victory in just three seasons of tennis.
Next off the court was No. 2 singles player Brylee Beckley. She overwhelmed Marion’s Graciela Solis 6-0, 6-2.
No. 3 singles Iva Witter also was dominant in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ava Marroni.
The evening’s longest and closest match was at No. 1 singles. Gabby Knight and Shaeli Castaneda battled long into the night, with Castaneda prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2).
Next up for the Eagles will be the annual SmashCancer match against Yorktown today (Thursday). Start time is 4:30 p.m. for the pre-match ceremony, with the match to follow about 5 p.m.
