Two good teams — 24th-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral and 26th-ranked Delta — battled closely on several courts Thursday night with the Irish pulling away for a 4-1 victory.
This was Cathedral’s first visit to Delta for a boys’ dual match. Between the two teams more than 50 players competed on a beautiful late-summer evening.
The Eagles (3-1) picked up a point at No. 1 doubles, where senior Brandon Jackson and junior Walker Boyle won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to stay unbeaten for the season.
Two other matches went three sets. Senior Tanner Southerland dropped a tight three-setter at No. 1 singles and seniors Jordan Ashton/Josef Zacek fell in three sets at No. 2 doubles.
The JV team dropped an 8-6 decision. However, junior Eli Arnold and junior Colin McCrady were winners in singles. Both are unbeaten for the season.
In doubles, the winners for Delta were the teams of sophomore OwenVest/freshman Dalton Royal; junior Ross Meacham/freshman Preston Shanayda; juniors Landon Freiburger/Logan Anderson; and junior Cooper Roach/freshman Will Kile.
Delta is now 3-1 at both the varsity and JV levels. The Eagles will play two matches Saturday, traveling first to Mt. Vernon courts for a match against conference opponent Shelbyville at 9 a.m. and then heading north to Culver Academies for a 3 p.m. match.
