Esposito, Behrman Earn County Tennis Open Singles Titles

After six days of tennis, both outside at Ball State Cardinal Creek courts and inside at the Muncie Northwest YMCA, the champions have been crowned in the 2018 Delaware County Tennis and Pickleball Open.

Grant Esposito claimed his third consecutive Men’s A Singles championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alec Robillard in the final match on Sunday.  Esposito, a graduate of Northeastern HS near Richmond, has played college tennis at a variety of schools the past three years.  He played at IUPUI last season and will be attending Indiana Wesleyan University this school year.

Robillard, a Delta HS graduate and Ball State University player, made the finals of three events: singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  He and Marion HS graduate Riley Worland won the Men’s A Doubles final 6-2, 6-4 over Delta graduates Zach Ervin and Drew DeHaven.  Ervin, a former Butler University player, is a past county singles champion who was playing in the tournament for the first time in several years.

In the Mixed A Doubles final, Jason Wegener and Sam Academia beat Alec Robillard and Lexie Manor.  Wegener is a Delta grad who will play at Westmont College in California; Academia is a junior-to-be at Yorktown HS.

In Women’s A Singles, Burris junior Isabelle Behrman won a round-robin event, with Sam Academia finishing second.

In Parent-Child A Doubles, Jon and Taylor Hall won a round-robin, with Don Wafer and Devyn Wafer finishing second.

For the first time in tournament history, a Pickleball Division was offered.  There were eight teams entered.  Tim Stringer and Joe Drown took first place, with Justin Overmyer and Gil Amaral placing second.
